Joe Conway Award
Dr. Joseph C. Conway, Jr. was a respected honorary member who served as the Chapter Advisor for our organization during the 1990s. During his tenure, he mentored several brothers towards success in their chosen professions.
He earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph. D. degrees in Engineering Science and Mechanics from the Pennsylvania State University in the 1960s, following his associate degree in Mining Engineering from Wilkes University in 1959. After graduating from Penn State, he returned to work as a professor in the Engineering Science Department for many years. Beyond his teaching duties, he was a project leader at the Applied Research Laboratory and was Head of the ARL Materials Science Department.
Dr. Conway served on many departmental committees, administrative committees (including the University Senate), and authored >70 journal articles and co-authored an engineering mechanics book.
Dr. Conway passed away on June 26, 2003 at the age of 64, in his adopted home of State College (he originally hailed from Kingston, PA).
Objective
Engineering Science and Engineering Mechanics are multidisciplinary honors programs. Students who choose these majors run the gamut of engineering topics, from thermodynamics to electromagnetism to materials science. This scholarship rewards those brothers who accept the challenge. This award provides $500 every Spring, which is split amongst all eligible Triangle brothers.
Applicant Criteria
Applicant is an Active or Associate Member of the Penn State Chapter of Triangle Fraternity
Applicant has obtained 5th semester standing or greater at The Pennsylvania State University
Applicant is enrolled in a major or minor course of study from the following list:
Engineering Mechanics Major (E MCH)
Engineering Science Major (E SC)
Engineering Mechanics Minor (E MCH)
Applicant possesses full-time enrollment status at the University Park campus for the current semester (i.e., the semester during which the scholarship winners will be announced)
Applicant certifies that either he 1) will possess full-time enrollment status OR 2) will earn Penn State credit for a full-time co-op or research assignment during the next semester — unfortunately, this disqualifies graduating seniors from earning the scholarship during their final semester
