Ted McLaughlin Triangle Ambassador Award

 James Edward “Ted” McLaughlin ps57 was a model alumnus whose career and service leadership inspired this award, which is bestowed annually upon the brother who has served as the ideal representative for Triangle in the larger community.

Brother McLaughlin graduated from Penn State with a degree in Industrial Engineering, during which time he was active in Tau Beta Pi (an engineering honors society) and Phi Mu Alpha (a social fraternity for musicians), in addition to Triangle Fraternity. He later earned his MBA from Boston University.

He built a career around printed circuit board manufacturing, at various times holding positions such as vice president, president, and owner at companies like GE, Honeywell Computer, Tyco, and several smaller operations.

Brother McLaughlin was also very active in his community outside of work: examples of his service include 30 years as a lector for his church, seven years as city commissioner, director of his local Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Lions Club.

Brother McLaughlin passed away unexpectedly on October 19, 2008 at the age of 70, in his adopted hometown of Lighthouse Point, Florida (he was originally from Montrose, PA).

Objective

To recognize the brother who has effected the largest positive change in the community outside of Triangle. The scholarship amount is $1,500, to be awarded to one winner in the Spring semester.

Applicant Criteria

• Applicant is an Active or Associate Member of the Penn State Chapter of Triangle Fraternity

• Applicant has signed a leasing contract for a room at the fraternity house (226 E. Beaver Ave.) covering the semester when he applies

• Applicant possesses full-time enrollment status at the University Park campus for the current semester (i.e., the semester during which the applicant applies for the scholarship)

• Applicant either possessed full-time enrollment status at the University Park campus for the previous semester, OR earned Penn State credit for a full-time co-op or research assignment during the previous semester
